Everybody’s talking about health care these days. You might think good health was the most important thing in the world.

You know why? Because it is! Without good health, it’s hard to enjoy the fun in life. Have you ever hurt your leg so that you couldn’t run? Or been so sick in bed that even watching TV wasn’t fun? Good health is an invisible thing that we take for granted – until it’s missing from our lives.

What can a kid do? A lot. In some ways, kids are the key to a healthier America. Just as kids have been a force in making our environment clearer by recycling and helping others by raising money for important causes, they can make good health happen every day.

Okay, so what can you do? Here are some ideas:

• Live healthy. Do something physical like running, biking, jumping rope or some kind of sport every day. And cut down on junk food like chips, cheeseburgers and sugary drinks.

 

• Encourage your family. Try to get something started. Maybe it’s a family walk after dinner. Ask mom or dad for fresh fruit the next time they shop. Try preparing a healthier snack with a parent.

 

Rev up your friends. When it’s time to hang out and friends are talking about computer games and videos, offer better ideas like a basketball game, bike ride, even a foot race. The key is to help them get off the couch and into the game.

 

• Gear up your school. If there’s too much grease in the food, talk with your principal or school nurse about it. If there’s no school sport for kids like you, see if you can get one started. Ask a teacher to be a coach. Just a little effort can create a lot of change.
